Between Chapters

An honest companion for leaders in transition.

Between Chapters is a short, honest companion for senior leaders navigating the period between roles. It is not a job-search manual. It is a slower kind of work — eleven chapters, each with a journaling protocol and an alternative AI reflection prompt — designed to be done alone, at your own pace, over weeks rather than days.

It is written for leaders who suspect that the space between roles is worth using well, and who would rather arrive at their next chapter changed than simply employed again. There is no sentimentality, no five-step system, and nothing to rush through.

Across three parts — The Honest Audit, Clarification, and Repositioning — the book offers a framework for seeing what just ended, clarifying who you are now that the title is gone, and stepping into the next chapter as the leader you have become rather than as a smaller copy of the one you were. Most senior leaders pass through this period without using it. A few use it for what it actually offers. This book is written for the second group.

What is inside

Eleven short chapters, three parts. Each chapter includes a journaling protocol you can do in a notebook and an alternative AI reflection prompt for those who prefer to work in conversation. The book is designed to be read slowly, a chapter at a time, over several weeks.

Part One

The Honest Audit

The work of looking clearly at what just happened

  • 1 · What actually ended
  • 2 · What you're still carrying
  • 3 · The patterns under the pattern
  • 4 · Putting things down
Part Two

Clarification

Who you are when the title is gone

  • 5 · Without the title
  • 6 · Your actual philosophy of leadership
  • 7 · The arc across your career
  • 8 · What was costume, what was you
Part Three

Repositioning

Stepping into the next chapter as who you are now

  • 9 · The role you're now ready for
  • 10 · Telling the story of this period
  • 11 · Re-entry
  • Appendix · The protocols, collected

A note from the author

I have spent twenty-seven years in human resources. Twenty-two of those in corporate roles, the last several in senior international positions, and a number of years in interim work besides. In that time I have watched a great many capable people pass through the period you may now be in. I have been in it myself.

This is not a job-search manual. It is a companion for the inner work that the period between roles makes possible — the work that is hardest to do once a new role begins, because the moment you are employed again the noise returns and the time vanishes. Most leaders, in my observation, do not use the window. A few use it for what it actually offers. Those are the ones whose next chapter looks materially different from the last one.

You can read this book straight through in an afternoon. I would suggest you do not. The chapters are short, but the work each one asks for is not, and the value of the book sits almost entirely in the work, not in the reading.

Some readers will want company through this work rather than doing it alone. The Alchemy of Leadership cohort programme is the longer, accompanied version of the work this book introduces, designed for senior leaders who want to do it alongside a small group of peers.
